Art as Resistance
Anti-rights and anti-gender narratives are increasingly gaining traction across the globe as an attempt to redefine and weaponize gender terminology and the language of “the family,” human and women’s rights to justify deeply patriarchal laws and practices that harm women, girls and families. These narratives target women’s rights groups by making it seem as though feminists are challenging an pre-ordained order.
Musawah acts on the premise that the spaces and discourse cannot be ceded to these intolerant forces. We believe in the power of art and the significance of storytelling to impact change. In our exhibit, Musawah will showcase the works of South and Southeast Asian Fellows of the MAC, highlighting issues of child marriage, women’s consent, divorce and polygamy using three creative media:documentary filmmaking, creative nonfiction writing and visual arts.
