Decolonizing Emerging Technology: An Intersectional Feminist Approach to Resisting Technology Facilitated Oppression
Technology harms are not yet apparent. The sense of danger isn’t pressing and visible as it is in physical space therefore the level of threat felt isn’t apparent.
Our session hopes to demonstrate what the linkages are between all of the issues relating to technology discrimination (such as a show and tell). In this section we hope to ask the following line of questions:
Do you think tech is neutral and objective? What does tech- gender based violence look like? Have you any lived realities that you can share? Situations where you felt unsafe and not just uncomfortable because of a tech intervention? How did you respond?
It is our intention to gather participants response to these questions and publish these as key takeaway to identify: What are the potential solutions? What support systems do you need? How do we build technology from the ground up, including all the demographics? What are the resources “money” needed to challenge the digital violations?
Ultimately we hope to achieve: Coalition building (with an intersectional approach) to build campaigns and networks in order to create an understanding of the issues and what gender dimensions are needed.
To come up with an ‘open letter’ or statement that is directed to the tech giant minority in order to build pressure for the need to ensure the proliferation of womxn in tech to be inclusive of the global majority womxn.
